Firefighters Extinguish Mattapan House Fire

Red Cross Assists Five Residents Displaced by Blaze

Firefighters quickly extinguished a two-alarm blaze at a Mattapan ranch home this morning,.

The fire broke out shortly after 9 a.m. and quickly grew to two-alarms at the 161 River Street home.

Initial reports indicated people may be inside the building. Crews began searching the building but did not report finding anyone inside. Boston fire officials say five residents were displaced but the American Red Cross is assisting them.

Fire crews quickly knocked down the fire, which was reported in the basement and first floor. Officials estimated about $150,000 in damages.
