Fox Hill Drawbridge Closed After Mechanical Malfunction

A mechanical malfunction on a drawbridge that crosses the Saugus River and connects Saugus and Lynn has prompted it to close Monday, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

At 5:40 p.m. Sunday, the bridge, which carries traffic on Route 107, was stuck in an open position after a problem occurred with one of the steel ropes used to operate the bridge. The bridge, known as the Fox Hill Drawbridge or the Belden G. Bly Bridge, will be closed to vehicular and marine traffic.

Commuters are advised to be aware of the detours in effect as a result of the bridge. Detour routes include Boston Street, Summer Street, Ballard Street and Lincoln Avenue. Several MBTA bus routes will also be using the detours Monday.

MassDOT announced that a new design for the bridge is nearly completed and the $80 million project should be advertised for construction bids in 2019.
