Groton Murder Suspect Stabbed Wife 27 Times, Autopsy Finds

The apparent stabbing death of 57-year-old Mary Fairbairn is being investigated as a homicide

The man who was arrested after authorities responded to his wife's apparent stabbing death in their Groton, Massachusetts, home was ordered held without bail at his arraignment Monday while he undergoes a psychiatric evaluation.

Gregory Fairbairn, 62, was arrested Saturday evening after he called 911 to report that he "murdered his wife with a knife," the Boston Herald reported. At the scene, police located 57-year-old Mary Fairbairn, who had died from apparent stab wounds, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

The Herald said an autopsy revealed that Mary Fairbairn was stabbed 27 times.

Police subsequently arrested Gregory Fairbairn, who is charged with murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. His wife's death is being investigated as a homicide, according to the district attorney’s office.

"It's awful, it's really sad," neighbor Alyssa Dallas said of the shocking investigation. "There's not really words to describe how it feels. It's really surreal. I don't think anyone's brain ever goes to the fact that violence of this magnitude is possible."

Fairbairn was arraigned in Ayer District Court on Monday. Additional charges are expected.

It is unclear if he has an attorney.
