Highest Gust in a Decade Atop Mount Washington

The Mount Washington Observatory notched its highest wind gust in over a decade early Saturday morning, according to observers.

The Observatory said the gust reached 148 miles per hour, just before 8 a.m..

Mount Washington is New England’s highest peak at an elevation of 6,288 feet.

For many years the iconic New Hampshire mountain held the record for the highest wind gust recorded on earth. That gust of 231 mph occurred in 1934.

In 1996, the record was eclipsed by a gust of 253 mph in Australia that occurred during a typhoon.
