A landmark Cape Cod lighthouse has closed for a major renovation project that will last until 2020.

The Cape Cod National Seashore announced last month that it will close the Highland Light in Truro in order to make extensive structural and safety repairs stemming from years of degradation caused by changes to the tower's ventilation system. The Cape Cod Times reports Sunday was the last day visitors could climb the lighthouse's stairs until repairs finish.

The renovation will include masonry repairs, new exterior coating, window replacement and other general safety improvements.

Highland Light will be closed to the public throughout 2019, but the keeper's shop and exhibit room adjacent to the lighthouse will remain open. The lighthouse itself is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Margaret Newsum, 93, had no idea that the Camp Fire was rapidly approaching her Magalia home until her caretaker left for the day and she turned on the television.
