It looks like another piece of the "old" Route 1 will be staying put.
According to an article in The Boston Globe, plans have been unveiled for residential and retail development at the old Hilltop Steak House site, and the iconic 68-foot cactus sign will be staying put. The post states that the sign will probably need new lighting along with other upgrades, but Michael Roberts, of AvalonBay Communities indicates that it will remain, saying that "It really is an important marker for the site. It really does represent the history of the site, and our intent is to keep it."
The saving of the Hilltop cactus mirrors that of another Route 1 icon, as it was reported here a few months ago that the orange dinosaur from the now-closed Route 1 Miniature Golf complex will be incorporated into new development there, which is expected to include apartments, two hotels, and three restaurants.
