‘Hot DAMN': Local Lawmakers React to Doug Jones' Defeat of Roy Moore

Democrat Doug Jones performed the unthinkable Tuesday, defeating a Republican endorsed by President Donald Trump in the race for a U.S. Senate seat. New England's largely Democratic delegation was quick to share its excitement on social media.

"Hot DAMN," Sen. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire said in a tweet that had more than 3,000 retweets in just over half an hour.

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont put out a statement, congratulating Jones and the residents of Alabama.

"This is a a victory not just for Jones and Democrats," he said. "It is a victory for justice and decency."

Moore was already a controversial figure before allegations of sexual misconduct with teenage girls were levied. While many Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, pushed for him to drop out of the race, Trump threw his full support behind him in the days leading up to the election.

"Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory," Trump said in a tweet. "The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win."

Democratic Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts also congratulated the people of Alabama.

"Our democracy thanks you," he said in a tweet.

"It's a proud night for America," agreed Democratic Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts.
