ICE: 32 Arrested in New England in 5-Day Sting
    TELEMUNDO 48

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston arrested dozens of people during a five-day enforcement surge across New England last month.

According to ICE, it arrested 32 people in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Hampshire between May 19 and May 23.

The 32 individuals arrested were charged with violating U.S. immigration laws. According to ICE, 22 were convicted criminals, 10 had criminal charges pending and 27 had been issued a final order of removal but had not left the U.S. Two had also been previously removed from the country, ICE said.

One person facing charges is a 45-year-old Vietnam citizen, ICE said. That person was arrested in Boston and has previously been convicted for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Another is a 31-year-old Kenya citizen, according to ICE. That person was arrested in Lowell, Massachusetts and has been convicted for assault and battery and fraud.

Two others include a 32-year-old citizen of the Dominican Republic and a 32-year-old citizen of Cape Verde. The former was arrested in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and has previously been convicted for three counts of identity theft, three counts of credit card fraud and three counts of credit card larceny. The latter was arrested in Brockton, Massachusetts, and had been previously convicted for armed assault to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. That person also has pending charges, including possession to distribute fentanyl.

Two people are in ICE custody awaiting a hearing before an immigration judge, and some of those arrested may face federal criminal prosecution for illegal re-entry after removal, ICE said.

Those who are not federally prosecuted will be processed administratively for removal from the U.S.

The 32 people arrested are from Brazil, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Kenya, Cape Verde, Poland and Vietnam.

ICE said the five-day enforcement was focused on people who had been ordered removed from the U.S. with criminal convictions or pending charges.
