Facing opposition from key Senate Democrats, Republican Gov. Charlie Baker is again urging the Legislature to support key elements of his proposed overhaul of the MBTA, including a financial control board to oversee the Boston-area transit system.
In a letter to lawmakers released by the administration Friday, Baker and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito warn that "marginal changes" to the oversight of the T will result in "little or no meaningful improvement" and ensure the system continues to struggle in the future.
The Senate is scheduled to debate a state budget proposal next week that includes a proposal to revamp the makeup of the current state transportation board. But Democratic leaders have said they do not believe a control board that would have broad powers over the T's finances is needed.
