Jury Awards Massachusetts Asphalt Worker $8.25M in Lawsuit

A jury has awarded a Massachusetts man and his family $8.25 million in a lawsuit filed after a piece of machinery used to seal cracks in asphalt fell and caused him permanent injuries.

The Telegram & Gazette reports that a federal jury ruled in favor of Brian Goodrich and his family Wednesday, finding the companies that designed the equipment more than 50 percent at fault.

The Oxford man was injured in April 2013. He was changing the machine's oil when a jack slipped, causing the machine to fall. He suffered disfigurement to his face and skull, blindness in one eye and loss of cognitive function.

A lawyer for the companies, Cimline Inc. and Garlock Equipment Inc., said he was withholding comment while they consider an appeal but expressed sympathy for Goodrich.
