Larry the Traffic Jam Turkey Killed by Car

An unfortunate ending came Friday night for a wild turkey that has become a fixture on the VFW parkway in Boston's West Roxbury neighborhood.

He became so famous for the way he would fight cars and tie up traffic that neighbors have even named him "Larry."

But the infamous turkey was finally hit and killed by a car around 7:15 pm.

"With all that snow we had, he was forced out into the middle of the road, I thought that was going to be the time, he survived that. I thought he had it in him to make it through. He didn't," said Hanna Griffiths, who lives in the area and became attached to Larry.

For months now, Larry has caused traffic jams at the intersection of VFW parkway and Baker Street.

He's pecked at cars, tried to fight his reflection, walked in the middle of the road, and had what neighbors call "gumption."

"I spent about a half hour there and he was fighting traffic. I come back and he's still doing the same thing," said one neighbor.

Friday, crews tried to catch Larry without success. Neighbors wanted him relocated for everyone's safety.

"It's really sad, especially on the day that he had been approved for relocation and they were trying to remove him," said Griffiths. "That's the day he met his demise, after all this time."

Now, some in West Roxbury are looking to give Larry a proper burial.
