After a slick start for much of the interior early Wednesday morning in rain, freezing rain and snow, Southern New England has been drying out with occasional showers. These showers come as rain and snow from bubbling clouds mixed with sunshine as spokes of energy ripple through the atmosphere above.

In Northern New England, areas of snow will consolidate to Central and Eastern Maine over the course of the day. However, a westerly wind pushing up against the slopes of our northern and western New England mountains will keep snow accumulating to the tune of at least another few inches there.

Drier and colder air will continue moving into New England on a busy westerly and northwest wind Wednesday night and Thursday, holding high temperatures in the 30s Thursday with a wind chill in the 20s. Highs will be only in the 20s by Friday into the weekend.

The new cold air will also be dry, meaning snow is unlikely outside of mountain snow showers until a storm tracks off the Eastern Seaboard Sunday. At this point, it looks like enough dry air will be in place to keep snow mostly south of New England.

We’ll keep a close eye on the South Coast, Cape and Islands to ensure the snow shield doesn’t expand far enough north to bring some accumulation. Thereafter, cool air continues through the remainder of the First Alert 10-day forecast with the next storm potential toward the end of next week.
