MBTA Back on Schedule Following ‘Severe Delays'

The MBTA said power had to be shut off around 4:00 Wednesday afternoon after smoke was detected in the tunnel between South Station and Broadway

MBTA train service is back up and running following "severe delays" on the Red Line due to a power problem, likely caused by Wednesday’s flooding.

The MBTA said power had to be shut off around 4:00 Wednesday afternoon after smoke was detected in the tunnel between South Station and Broadway.

Service was temporarily suspended between Park Street and JFK and passengers were let off. Service was restored around 5:15 p.m.

During a hearing on Beacon Hill Wednesday it was revealed nearly 69-percent of bus and subway trips were canceled by the T between January and August because no driver was available, according to the Boston Globe.

The globe went on to report 47-percent of those absences came from workers who have medical excuses due to chronic illness, citing the federal Family and Medical Leave Act.

During the hearing they compared that number to the state Department of Transportation, where only 6.8-percent of staff needed to take days off for chronic illnesses.
