Man Charged With Halloween Hit-and-Run in Salem Asks for Trial

A driver who previously pleaded guilty to charges of being drunk when he hit a woman and her 10-year-old twin daughters as they crossed a Salem street during Halloween festivities has withdrawn his plea and is asking for a trial.

The Salem News reports that 53-year-old Dexter Mitchell, of Gloucester, withdrew his plea Tuesday because he faced another 45 days in jail before he would be eligible for parole. A judge last month agreed to let Mitchell withdraw his guilty pleas if he did not like the offered sentence.

Police say Mitchell drove away after hitting the North Attleborough family on the night before Halloween in 2016. He then allegedly got rid of some beer cans before returning to the scene.

His trial is now scheduled to start in February.
