Man Charged with Trafficking Fentanyl in Whitman

A man was arrested Friday night in Whitman, Massachusetts for trafficking fentanyl following a two-month investigation, police announced.

John Townsend, 31, was charged with drug trafficking and possession with the intent to distribute fentanyl. The investigation leading to his arrest started in February, when police developed information about opioid distribution in the area, according to Whitman police.

Friday evening, detectives observed an apparent drug transaction taking place in a driveway near Auburn and School streets. Officers then conducted a traffic stop of a suspected vehicle after it rolled through a stop sign on Auburn Street. The driver, later identified as Townsend, was arrested following an on-scene investigation.

Police found 15 grams of apparent fentanyl, materials used to prepare heroin, multiple cell phones, and $5,000 in cash during the arrest.

Townsend will be arraigned in Brockton District Court on Monday.
