Lawyers for a man convicted of killing an 18-year-old woman more than 40 years ago in New Hampshire are asking a judge to grant him a new trial based on DNA testing, but prosecutors say the case against him remains strong.
Robert Breest, now 77, claims he was wrongly convicted of killing Susan Randall, whose badly beaten body was found on the frozen Merrimack River in Concord in February 1971.
At a hearing Tuesday, his lawyer said the latest round of DNA tests strongly suggest that she had a violent struggle with at least two men before she died, which is inconsistent with the state's case and sufficient grounds for a new trial.
Prosecutors say the DNA could have been contaminated, or come from casual contact with someone else.
