A 42-year-old Dorchester man who allegedly jumped onto the hood of a school bus in the middle of the Mass. Turnpike in Newton faced a judge Tuesday in connection with the bizarre incident.
Kevin Crowe appeared in a courtroom on multiple charges, including negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to use care in stopping and marked lanes violation, after he parked his vehicle on the turnpike and allegedly hopped onto the hood of a school bus that was traveling behind him.
Crowe's brother represented him in court on Tuesday, and argued to have the case re-classified under the Valor Act, which provides support to veterans. The Department of Veteran Affairs will now help to determine if Crowe is eligibile for treatment services rather than imprisonment.
The caught-on-camera incident happened on May 1, according to officials. In the video, Crowe can be seen yelling and making hand gestures to the school bus driver, Joseph Rizoli. The school bus was unoccupied except for Rizoli. Crowe appears to question why the school bus had tinted windows.
Eventually, Crowe hops off the hood and Rizoli drives away. As a result of the odd encounter, Crowe lost his driver’s license due to "an immediate threat/medical," according to MassDOT.
"I don't know what type of person does something like that," Rizoli said. "The guy stopped in front of me and I had no idea what he was doing. I’m like, 'This guy’s crazy.'"
A judge ordered the arraignment to be continued. He's due back in court on Aug. 3.
