Suspect Indicted for Murder in Fatal Shooting of Yarmouth Police Sgt. Sean Gannon

Thomas Latanowich is charged with murder and eight other counts

Accused cop killer Thomas Latanowich has been indicted for murder and eight other charges in the fatal shooting of Yarmouth Police Sgt. Sean Gannon back in April.

Latanowich, 30, whose last known address was in Somerville, was indicted for murder, aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card, mistreating a police dog and for being an armed career criminal, according to the Cape & Islands District Attorney's Office.

He remains held without bail and will be arraigned in Barnstable Superior Court at a later date.

Gannon, 32, was shot and killed on April 12 as he and six other officers attempted to serve a warrant on Latanowich at a home on Blueberry Lane in Barnstable. Gannon's K-9, Nero, was also shot in the face and neck. He underwent surgery and is continuing to recover.

Latanowich has a lengthy criminal history. When he was arrested in December of 2016 and charged in a non-fatal stabbing, Yarmouth police described him as a "notorious and violent criminal" with over 100 prior criminal charges in Massachusetts. Many of the charges were later dismissed.

Prosecutors have expressed frustration that his prior charges didn't result in more lengthy sentences, which could have kept him off the street and possibly prevented Gannon's death.
