Employee Fatally Shot Inside Dorchester Market, Boston Police Investigating

A man was shot and killed Friday night on Bowdoin Street in Dorchester, Massachusetts, according to Boston Police.

The shooting happened 10 minutes before midnight, and the victim was pronounced dead on scene, according to EMS.

Family at the scene Saturday told NBC Boston the victim is 31-year-old Natlino Gomes, who worked at Peguero's Market and was closing the store when he was shot to death inside the store.

"We are taking it hard. No one can believe it because it just happened a few hours ago," Julie Goncalves said. "Everyone is really taking it very hard."

Goncalves, a family member, says Gomes had the job at the neighborhood convenience store to pay off his black BMW that was still sitting across the street from the market Saturday morning.

"He was working just so he can get this car back on the road."

Investigators are scouring surveillance video inside the store.

Boston Police COmmissioner William Evans says the video has provided some clues.

"They went in there, what I believe, you know, looking for some reason for him. I think clearly he was the person they were looking for. I don't know what's behind it but obviously the detectives are looking at it right now."

Goncalves, feeling helpless, is waiting for answers. She says Gomes was always looking for a new job, trying to stay out of trouble.

The family member lit a single candle in his memory Saturday outside of a closed Peguero's, illuminating another life lost in the city.

Usually open at 6 a.m., the market was closed Saturday after the tragic event. It was not immediately clear when the store will be back open.

The closing came as a surprise to regulars.

"I'm surprised to hear it. I'm surprised cause I come here everyday."

It's also a suprise that Gomes was shot at the end of his 6 p.m. to midnight shift Friday.

"Maybe they tried to rob him or something. He is a very nice guy, a nice guy. Whatever you need he will do it for you. A very nice guy."

The family is grieving the loss of their loved one and looking for closure to ease their pain.

The fatal shooting remains under investigation.
