Man Charged With Possessing a Meat Cleaver Outside Tsarnaev Sentencing

The man drove through a security barrier

A man is facing multiple charges after he drove through a security barrier and parked in a restricted area outside the courthouse where Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was being sentenced.

Police say it happened at around 1:12 p.m. Wednesday. Officers stopped and searched the car and recovered a meat cleaver. Police note that the suspect did not use or threaten anyone with the weapon.

The man, later identified as 24-year-old Patrick Carrerio of Woburn, was taken away in handcuffs. He is charged with failure to stop for a police officer, disorderly conduct, and unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon.

In speaking with Carrerio, officers learned the suspect had driven to the courthouse to express his dissent with the death penalty.

Vincent Lisi, the FBI's special agent in charge, earlier said the man is in custody at the Boston Police Department, and that members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force were sent there to work look into whether there might be any terrorism connections.

"In today's threat environment, we can't overlook anything," he said.
