Man in Van May Have Offered Candy to Kids in Randolph, Police Say

The driver of the van was questioned by police — investigators now want to know if there may have been other, similar incidents

After someone told police that the driver of a van offered candy to children in Randolph, Massachusetts, the department is asking for the public's help in their investigation.

The driver of a brown van had stopped in traffic on South Main Street, near Sam's Gas & Auto Repair, at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and allegedly held out his arm — offering two lollipops to a group of children nearby, Randolph police said, based on a witness' report.

The witness told the children not to take the candy and the driver left, police said. That witness provided police with a license plate number which they used to track down the driver.

Police said they questioned the driver but their investigation of the incident remains ongoing.

Investigators now want to know if there may have been other, similar incidents and are asking parents of school-aged children to speak with their youngsters.

"We are actively investigating this incident to determined exactly what transpired," Chief William Pace said in a statement. "We are asking parents to please have a discussion with your children, and please come forward if your child saw or heard anything or was approached by this suspicious driver."

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Randolph Police Department.
