Man Who Attacked Wife's Lawyer With Hatchet Pleads Guilty

Michael Kelly was sentenced Wednesday in Norfolk Superior Court after pleading guilty to charges including armed assault with intent to murder

A Quincy, Massachusetts, man who attacked his estranged wife's divorce lawyer with a hatchet and insecticide spray has been sentenced to up to nine years in prison.

The Patriot Ledger reports that 54-year-old Michael Kelly was sentenced Wednesday in Norfolk Superior Court after pleading guilty to charges including armed assault with intent to murder.

Prosecutors say Kelly ambushed Robert Johnson in a parking garage on Feb. 24, sprayed wasp-killing solution in his face, and hit him in the head with the hatchet. Johnson required two dozen staples to close his wounds.

Prosecutors say Kelly had gone to two hardware stores days before the attack to buy the hatchet and insecticide.

Johnson said he thought he was going to die.

Kelly's attorney called the attack out of character and blamed alcohol abuse.
