A Massachusetts man has been extradited to Scotland to face an attempted murder charge in connection to the poisoning of a fellow student at the University of St. Andrews.

Prosecutors say 24-year-old Alexander Hilton, of Princeton, is charged with spiking a fellow American student's red wine with methanol in 2011.

At the time, Hilton was a sophomore studying economics and computing at St. Andrews.

A federal court judge in Boston approved Hilton's extradition in 2013. Hilton remained free on bond while pursuing appeals. But he was jailed in Rhode Island in April while awaiting extradition.

U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz's office says Hilton returned to Scotland on Friday.

Hilton had fought extradition. His U.S. lawyer has said Hilton suffers from mental health issues and is a suicide risk.
