Mass. Officials Say Plan Ahead for Thanksgiving Weekend Travel

Massachusetts officials say residents should expect heavy traffic as we approach Thanksgiving.

About 28.5 million people will be flying over the weekend. Massport CEO-Thomas Glynn suggests TSA Pre Check and Global Entry for shortening wait times in security lines.

Sunday and Wednesday you can expect crowded highways. Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollock suggests leaving early - but most importantly -practicing safe driving.

While construction on roads will shut down next Wednesday at noon, Pollock said MassDOT has tools on their website that allow you to plan the best time for traveling in or out of state.

She also said to give yourself extra time to travel, don't text while driving and avoid being distracted while driving.

"Unlike last year, when we had six fatalities just over the thanksgiving long weekend, we would love to have a safe holiday where everyone gets where they’re going and back home safely," said Pollock.

The MBTA said at the press conference that riders should regularly check in on the status of their train or bus for potential delays.

Additional Transit Police officers will be out during the holiday weekend in uniform and plain clothes. People should contact police if they see something suspicious.

"Nothing is too small, said Transit Police Chief Kenneth Green. "If you get that little knot in your stomach and something is just not right, please don’t hesitate to contact us."

Last year, AAA said they expected more than 48 million Americans to drive or fly somewhere for Thanksgiving.

Major highways, including the Mass. Turnpike were gridlocked during peak times last year.
