Massachusetts Environmental Police Chief Fired Amid Investigation

The chief of the Massachusetts Environmental Police has reportedly been fired following an internal investigation into allegations of misconduct.

According to the Boston Globe, Colonel James McGinn had been suspended without pay earlier in October as an internal review was conducted. McGinn was accused of fixing citations for friends and installed cameras at a Westborough facility without authorization.

A state report obtained by the Globe suggested he installed the cameras for surveillance of officers at the inland enforcement headquarters for the agency.

An attorney representing McGinn told the Globe the colonel's firing was politically motivated.

"This was, to say the least, an amateurish investigation," Timothy Burke told the Globe.

Burke said the agency had been underperforming before McGinn took over three years ago and that he had worked to "professionalize" the agency.
