Massachusetts State Police and Townsend Police are looking for Kevin Hamel, who is accused of assaulting a family member.

A man on the Massachusetts State Police Most Wanted Fugitives list was apprehended in Miami, Florida, after eluding authorities for nearly a year.

Kevin Hamel, 50, was wanted for kidnapping, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, domestic assault and battery, and vandalism stemming from a March 30 incident in Townsend.

Police said they had received a 911 call from a woman who was fleeing from an assault in progress. Responding officers determined that Hamel had held the woman against her will and violently assaulted her, causing numerous injuries.

An arrest warrant was issued, but Hamel was unable to be located.

State police say Hamel's criminal record in Massachusetts includes convictions for firearms charges, stalking, kidnapping and restraining order violations. At the time he went missing, police had said there were eight restraining orders against him in Massachusetts.

Hamel was added to the list of Massachusetts' Most Wanted fugitives back in August.

After being tracked to a Miami residence by a state trooper assigned to the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, Hamel was taken into custody Friday morning by members of the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Hamel is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as a fugitive from justice pending rendition to Massachusetts.
