Massachusetts Starts Fiscal Year Without New State Budget

Massachusetts is starting the 2020 fiscal year without a new state budget in place.

The fiscal year begins Monday, but Massachusetts House and Senate lawmakers have failed to iron out their differences in a proposed $42.7 billion spending plan.

State services will continue uninterrupted however after lawmakers passed an interim budget that authorizes spending at 2019 fiscal year levels through the end of July.

That's intended to give House and Senate budget negotiators time to come up with a final compromise budget to deliver to Republican Gov. Charlie Baker for his signature.

While overall state spending is roughly the same in the House and Senate versions of the budget, there are key policy differences, including the Senate's plan to freeze tuition and fees at the University of Massachusetts.
