Mass. State Trooper Hospitalized After Cruiser Struck by Car in Construction Zone

Authorities are trying to determine whether the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel

A Massachusetts State Police trooper was hospitalized Wednesday after their cruiser was hit by a car on Interstate 495 north in Haverhill.

Authorities said the trooper was working a detail at a construction site near River Street when a driver entered a cordoned off area and struck the trooper's parked cruiser at 9:20 a.m.

The trooper, whose name has not been released, was taken to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, but authorities said the driver might have fallen asleep at the wheel.

In the wake of the accident, officials with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation reminded motorists to use caution while approaching and driving in construction zones.
