Driver Charged With OUI, Child Endangerment in Crash That Killed Motorcyclist

A man is facing numerous charges, including driving under the influence of drugs, in connection with a head-on crash that killed a motorcyclist Thursday morning in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

Police said the crash happened at 11:50 a.m. in front of the Bridgewater Sports Complex on Bedford Street.

Authorities said it appears that the driver of a Toyota sedan was traveling north on Route 18 when he allegedly crossed the center line and drove into the southbound lane in order to pass the vehicle in front of him. As a result, the driver, who has not yet been identified, struck a motorcyclist head-on who had been traveling southbound.

The driver of the Toyota, identified as 29-year-old Anthony Hathaway of Whitman, remained on the scene. Police said an investigation determined he was under the influence of drugs and he was taken into custody.

Hathaway was charged with motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of drugs, operating under the influence of drugs, endangering a child while operating under the influence of drugs, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and marked lanes violation.

The motorcyclist, who has also not yet been identified, was taken to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton where he later died.

Hathaway was also taken to a hospital for evaluation. He was released into the custody of police.

Police said Hathaway will likely be arraigned Friday in Brockton District Court. It's unclear if he has an attorney.

Route 18 remains closed in both directions between Cottage Street and Winter Street as authorities investigate the cause of the crash.
