No Red Sox Named All-Star Starters

There will be no Red Sox starters in the All-Star Game after Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez failed to win starter spots in the revamped voting this year.

Betts was a finalist among outfielders and Martinez at DH. Martinez (.287, 17 homers, 45 RBI) lost out to Hunter Pence of the Texas Rangers who had 46.7%, percent of the vote to Martinez's 31.2%. Nelson Cruz of the Minnesota Twins was third with 22.0%. In the AL outfield, Betts (.261, 13 HR, 37 RBI), the 2018 AL MVP, was beaten out by the Los Angeles Angels' Mike Trout and Houston Astros teammates George Springer and Michael Brantley. Springer only recently returned after missing more than a month with injury. Trout was the leading vote-getter overall.

Trout got 25.5% of the vote,  Springer 15.7% and Brantley 10.8%, Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge (9.9%) was fourth and Betts (9.1%) fifth.

The game is July 9 at Progressive Field in Cleveland.

For the first time, fan voting for starters was a two-tiered process. It was paired down last week to the top three vote-getters at each position and top nine outfielders. Being a runner-up among the finalists doesn't automatically get you a spot on the team. Pitchers and reserves will be announced on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. in an ESPN selection show. A player ballot, with input from the commissioner's office, selects the pitchers and reserves.

The All-Star managers - the Red Sox' Alex Cora for the AL and the Dodgers' Dave Roberts for the NL - are no longer responsible for picking the pitchers and reserves.

Player ballotting accounts for 16 players in the NL (no DH) and 17 in the AL -- eight pitchers (five starters and three relievers), as well as one backup for each position (including DH in the AL).
