    Police Officer Shot and Killed in Barnstable

    A Yarmouth, Massachusetts police officer was shot and killed while serving an arrest warrant in Barnstable.

    Police and other public officials across Massachusetts showed their support on social media after a police officer was shot on Cape Cod.

    Sean Gannon, an officer from the Yarmouth Police Department, died after being shot while serving a warrant in Barnstable.

    "With a heavy heart, our condolences go out tonight to our brothers & sisters of the @yarmouthpolice & to Officer Sean Gannon's family & friends," Massachusetts State Police tweeted.

    "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Yarmouth Police Department," New Bedford Police tweeted. "Your brothers and sisters in blue stand with all of you."

    "Thoughts and prayers to all involved officers and the entire Yarmouth Police Department," Woburn Police Chief Robert Ferullo tweeted.

    "We are sending prayers to our brothers and sisters on Cape Cod," the police department in Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard tweeted.

    Gov. Charlie Baker also issued his condolences.

    "I am heartbroken to learn of the passing of Officer Gannon," Baker said in a statement. "My thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones and the Yarmouth Police Department after this tragic loss. The Commonwealth is blessed to have courageous men and women who put their lives on the line to protect our communities every day."

    A suspect was taken into custody after a standoff with police and SWAT responders.
