The suspect then fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money, police said.

Officers who were en route to the scene saw a man who matched the suspect description walking in the area of 686 Newbury Street. They stopped their vehicle and called out to the man. As they approached him, officers noticed the suspect kept his right hand tightly inside his jacket pocket despite their commands to do otherwise.

Officers gained control of his right hand and safely recovered a loaded .380 caliber Cobra handgun from inside his coat pocket.

The suspect was placed into custody without incident after being positively identified, police said. The suspect is Leonard Payne, 54, of Hyde Park.

Investigators are continuing to locate the stolen money.

Payne will appear in Boston Municipal Court on multiple charges including unlawful possession of a firearm, armed and masked robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm with three prior violent or drug crimes and armed kidnapping.
