PD: Centerville Man Charged With 7th OUI

A Centerville man has been arrested and charged with his seventh OUI.

According to police, 62-year-old Edward Flanagan of Centerville, Massachusetts, was charged with an OUI on Wednesday evening.

The arrest was made after an officer on duty was nearly struck by a black 2008 Nissan Senatra operated by Flanagan at the intersection of Route 28 and Phinney's Lane in Centerville at about 7 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

Flanagan's vehicle had reportedly entered the intersection, cutting off the cruiser.

The officer made a motor vehicle stop for failing to yield the right-of-way.

According to the officer, Flanagan displayed numerous signs of intoxication. Based on the officer's roadside investigation, which included verbal field sobriety tests and physical observations, the officer concluded Flanagan was under the influence of alcohol and placed him under arrest.

A further investigation revealed that Flanagan's driver's license had been revoked as a result of previous OUI convictions. Flanagan had been arrested four times in Florida and two other times in Massachusetts for the same offense.

The officer also found two open containers of alcohol under the driver's seat of Flanagan's car.

Flanagan was transported to the Barnstable Police Station.

He is facing several charges, including operating to endanger and operating with an open container.

According to the Cape Cod Times, Flanagan was arraigned Thursday at the Barnstable District Court. He pleaded not guilty to operating under the influence.

It is unclear if he has an attorney.

He is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 9 for a pretrial hearing.
