Paid Sick Time Requirement Takes Hold in Massachusetts

When a new paid sick time requirement takes effect in Massachusetts, state officials say the focus will be on educating employers about the law, not punishing any for noncompliance.

When a new paid sick time requirement takes effect in Massachusetts, state officials say the focus will be on educating employers about the law, not punishing any for noncompliance.

The voter-approved law allows employees to earn up to 40 hours of paid sick leave in a year, accruing one hour for every 30 hours they work. It takes effect on Wednesday and is expected to cover up to one million workers not currently entitled to paid sick days.

Regulations drafted by Attorney General Maura Healey's office do not specify penalties for employers who violate the law, but would allow for civil enforcement under the state's existing fair wage laws.

Healey said Tuesday that her office is initially intent on helping businesses understand the new law and what steps must be taken to comply.
