Pedestrian Struck, Killed by Brockton Police Cruiser

A pedestrian who was hit by a police cruiser Friday night in Brockton, Mass., has died, officials say.

The crash happened around 8:19 p.m. in the area of 581 Main Street. The incident involved a marked Brockton Police cruiser, state police confirmed.

A Brockton Police officer driving the vehicle was responding to an emergency call with lights and sirens on the cruiser. The officer tried to stop and avoid the collision, and immediately attempted to help the victim, authorities found in a preliminary investigation.

The victim, identified as 61-year-old Antonio Tavares of Brockton, received treatment from EMS on-scene before being brought to Good Samaritan Hospital, according to Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz. Tavares was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Brockton officer was brought to South Shore Hospital for treatment.

Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office are stilll investigating the crash alongside crime scene personnel.
