Plans to build a proposed marijuana cultivation facility in central Massachusetts have been dealt a major blow now that the town's planning board has voted to deny the project.
James Philbrook, chairman of the Charlton Planning Board, confirmed to NBC10 Boston the board voted 4-0 Wednesday night against a plan by Valley Green Grow of North Andover to set up shop in town.
The company sought to build an 800,000-to-1.5-million-square-foot greenhouse for cannabis research, as well as for medical and recreational cultivation.
The facility was proposed for the site of the former Charlton Orchards on Old Worcester Road which was destroyed by a fire in 2015.
In May 2018, the board of selectmen approved the host agreement with the town, but nearby residents complained they didn't have a say in the matter.
According to The Telegram, Valley Green Grow plans to appeal Wednesday's decision on its $100 million project.
