Police: Body of Child Is Not High-Profile Missing Girl

Police are pushing the public for any tips they might have to help identify a little girl found dead last week off the Massachusetts coast.

State police say their best resource to find out who she is and how her body ended up washed on Deer Island is you.

"Somebody knows who this child is," said Massachusetts State Police Col. Timothy Alben.

Investigators believe the girl was about 4 when she died. Her body was discovered June 25 on a rocky beach.

Since then, police have launched what's become a massive social media plea to the public.

"When I left here last night, we had over 24 million - 24 million - views of our posting on Facebook," said Alben.

Overnight, that number skyrocketed to about 34 million views, getting nearly 35,000 comments, including tips.

"Obviously, the public is very, very engaged in this. We've generated a lot of conversation, if you will, across social media on it," said Alben. "Our team is working on sifting through all of that info to try and find a viable lead."

Because of those tips, they've been able to rule out three well-publicized cases involving missing girls: Aliayah Lunsford, from West Virginia, Ayla Reynolds from Maine; and Caleigh Harrison, who went missing in Rockport Massachusetts.

At Deer Island, a small memorial is set up for the young Jane Doe.

"Everyone has questions about what happened," said Ted Paiva of Revere.

Kim Marco has a young daughter and says she can't imagine not knowing where her child is.

"The reconstruction of the little girl - I shared it on social media," she said. "I've seen it just flooded and hoping that they can just bring some resolution to somebody's family who may be missing a little girl."

As you enjoy your holiday, investigators want you to think of the little girl, keep an eye out and share this picture.

"Please stay engaged in this," said Alben. "We need the public help on this, and it's been extraordinary thus far."
