Two teenage carjacking suspects are in custody after assaulting an elderly man and leading police on a chase through several Massachusetts towns on Wednesday.

Police said the juvenile suspects punched a 82-year-old man from Stoughton in the face, took his keys and stole his car on North Main Street in Brockton around 11:24 a.m.

The owner of Gowell's Candy said the incident happened outside his shop and the man who was assaulted and carjacked was a customer and was with his wife at the time.

Troopers started following the stolen vehicle around 11:42 a.m. on Route 24 southbound in Brockton. They followed the vehicle to Interstate 495 in Raynham at speeds up to 100 mph, where the suspects eventually took exit 9 to Taunton and then drove to Norton, where the stolen car rolled over on its roof near Cranberry Lane.

The two suspects allegedly tried to flee on foot, but troopers were able to catch up with them. The suspects -- a 17-year-old from Providence, Rhode Island, and a 16-year-old from Holbrook -- were taken by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained in the crash.

Both juveniles will face criminal charges related to the incident. Their names were not released by police because of their ages.

Brockton police said the 16-year-old had previously led them on a chase in another stolen vehicle on Jan. 25. He was in the custody of the state Department of Youth Services but escaped early Wednesday morning along with the 17-year-old.

The 16-year-old is also facing charges for an attempted breaking and entering on North Warren Avenue in Brockton shortly before noon on Wednesday.
