A woman was stabbed Wednesday in Belmont, Massachusetts, and a man was arrested in connection with the attack after leading police on a three-town chase.
Witnesses told NBC10 Boston they saw the man chasing the woman down a driveway with a knife, catching up to her at the bottom.
The woman's terrified screams shattered the silence of the normally peaceful neighborhood just after 9:30 a.m., witnesses said. Police found her with apparent stab wounds on Partridge Lane at 9:38 a.m., according to the Middlesex District Attorney's office.
The man and woman know each other, the district attorney's office said, but didn't give details on their relationship or who they were.
The screams sounded at first like children playing, neighbors said, but they quickly realized it was something much more serious when they saw the pair struggling on the ground by the street.
“You just see the woman’s on the ground and the guy’s basically on top and struggling," Zhijie Sui added
Construction workers who heard the screams saw the woman running from the man with the knife. They grabbed shovels and rushed over to help.

Construction worker Fabio Depina said he saw the woman cut on her throat and the attacker getting into a car, so he told a friend with a shovel to hit the car.
"I just went to the girl, I take my shirt and she had a deep cut in the throat, and I put my shirt on it," he said.
The suspect fled the scene and led police on a chase through Arlington before crashing his vehicle in Cambridge. He was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for injuries sustained in the crash, authorities said.
The victim was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.
It's not yet clear what charges the alleged attacker may face.
