Possibility of Third Bridge to Ease Cape Traffic

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation launched the Cape Cod Canal Transportation Study to look at the possibility of a third bridge to the Cape.

When driving to Cape Cod there are two choices- go over the Bourne or Sagamore Bridge. Now there's talk of adding another bridge.

The Bourne and the Sagamore Bridges are aging and will soon need repairs. That's why the Massachusetts Department of Transportation launched the Cape Cod Canal Transportation Study to look at ways to ease traffic.

"I think it's an interesting idea. It's certainly something we're going to pursue," said Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker. "It depends a lot on the ability of finding somebody who wants to finance it and all the issues associated with constructing it."

The idea for another bridge came up last year and is slowly building momentum. Under the proposal, the Sagamore Bridge would be one way- leaving Cape Cod. The new bridge would hold traffic heading toward Cape Cod and would come with a toll.

"Having spent a lot of time talking to people on the Cape and starting with the presumption that most people would not support a third bridge, I've been surprised by the level of support I found down there," said Governor Baker.
