Rhode Island State Police Identify Troopers Involved in Deadly I-95 Shooting

Rhode Island State Police have released the names of the troopers involved in a deadly shooting on a busy stretch of Interstate 95.

The department says Detective Lt. Cynthia Trahan, Corporal Scott R. Carlsten, Detective Corporal Herbert D. Tilson and Trooper Garrett S. Hassett fired 23 shots after Thursday's high-speed chase of a pickup truck. All are on leave.

Providence Police last week identified five of their officers who had also fired, killing 32-year-old Joseph Santos and injuring a woman.

The chase came as police were looking for a different man who had stolen a state police cruiser and were looking for a white pickup in connection with that incident.

The trooper whose cruiser was stolen was identified as Michael J. Doherty. The man who allegedly stole the cruiser, Donald Morgan, was arrested a day later.

Investigators have since said the trooper left Morgan in the back of the cruiser alone with the cruiser's keys in the ignition. Morgan was handcuffed at the time.

Col. Ann Assumpico says both incidents are under investigation.
