    2-Year-Old Attacked by Rabid Skunk

    A young girl was bitten by a skunk that tested positive for rabies.

    A young girl was bitten by a rabid skunk Monday evening in Weymouth, Massachusetts.

    The skunk attack was reported at a home belonging to the girl's grandmother about 5:30 p.m., Weymouth fire officials said.

    The grandmother told the Patriot Ledger that, when the animal went up to her back door, she and her daughter ran around the house to grab the child but the skunk went towards the toddler and latched on to her leg.

    The child, who is 2, began to kick and hit the skunk, trying to shake it off, according to the newspaper.

    A firefighter who arrived at the home killed the skunk, according to the Weymouth Fire Department.

    The skunk was sent to a lab and has since tested positive for rabies, fire officials said. They didn't know if the girl tested positive.

    According to the Patriot Ledger, the child suffered scratches to her hands and legs and will now have to undergo rabies treatment as a preventive measure.
