Rain, Mix and Snow Sunday Night Into Monday

Some areas to see wintry mix Monday

What to Know

  • Sunday begins mostly dry, but light icing is possible across higher elevations.
  • Rain moves in tonight - so keep that rain gear handy.
  • Some areas will see a wintry mix Monday morning.

Sunday begins mostly dry, but light icing is possible across higher elevations of Hartford County, CT, the Berkshires & Worcester Hills as our next system slowly moves in. By afternoon, rain spreads east & north along the south coast of New England. An onshore breeze continues so the eastern coastline could see a bit of drizzle before the rain picks up. Sunday evening will be soggy, so keep the rain gear with you as you head out for any holiday shopping.

This low pressure center will actually track near the benchmark Sunday…which typically brings heavy snow to New England. Though we don’t have enough cold air bottled up, and that’s why we aren’t expecting any high snowfall accumulations. As the colder air wraps around the backside of the low (western & central MA) Monday morning, we see a brief change from a wintry mix across Boston to some wet snowflakes. It is still uncertain when the rain/snow line collapses into Boston and how long snow will fall. Not a big deal…usually. However this changeover occurs during the morning rush. Even a coating of snow can many the drive slow-going and slick.

Expecting a coating to 1” of snow in Boston, along the Pike and north into Worcester County. 1-3” of snow interior New England from Manchester to Portland. 3-6” of snow in higher elevations & northern VT, NH & the crown of Maine.

The wind will be strong across Cape Cod & islands Sunday afternoon & evening. Gusts 30-45mph from the east, northeast. Rough seas expected offshore with wave heights around 10 feet. Not expecting coastal flooding as the tides are astronomically low.

Colder and drier air moves in Monday afternoon, Tuesday and Wednesday with high temperatures in the 30s. A gusty northwest wind Monday through Tuesday will make it feel like the 20s despite the sunshine in the forecast.

Heavy rain returns on Friday, while next weekend could stay mostly dry and milder. There is a chance for a wintry mix Christmas Eve in to Christmas day.
