Record Number of Travelers This Memorial Day Weekend

One million residents in the Commonwealth are expected to travel, with more than 900,000 traveling by car

Nearly 43 million people across the country are expected to travel this Memorial Day weekend.

Some of them are heading to Cape Cod as we speak, and those numbers will only grow as the day goes on, potentially causing gridlock on the roads.

Memorial Day weekend kicks off the unofficial start of the summer season with what is expected to be the second highest travel totals on record since 2000. And for the first time on record, one million residents in the Commonwealth are expected to travel, with more than 900,000 travelling by car.

Despite rising gas prices, with some places seeing nearly three dollars per gallon, most travelers across the country will be driving to their destinations.

Experts believe delays on major roads could be three times longer than the normal evening commute.

Drivers in metro areas like Boston can expect to see more traffic.

To beat the congestion, experts suggest avoiding commute peak times in the morning and evening. And one more word of caution: Monday is expected to be the worst day for travel in terms of traffic.
