Red Sox Expected to Increase Ticket Prices for 2020

The Boston Red Sox won't be defending their World Series title in the 2019 MLB playoffs after falling well short of expectations this season, but despite the lackluster results, the franchise could increase ticket prices yet again.

"We've taken a pretty consistent approach to ticket pricing the last four or five years -- low single digits or cost of living, inflationary increases," Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy told reporters Monday at Fenway Park. "We haven't made a decision this year for 2020, but I would anticipate another modest increase."

Increasing ticket prices -- even after a bad season -- is not an unexpected move, but it might be a harder sell to the fans entering 2020 compared to previous years.

The Red Sox greatly disappointed their fans this season and didn't give them much of a reason to pay what were already high ticket prices. Boston increased ticket prices an average of 2.5 percent after winning the World Series in 2018.

Red Sox ownership also has been vocal in recent weeks about trimming payroll. Telling fans to pay more money to see a less talented version of the Red Sox in 2020 -- one that could be without Mookie Betts or J.D. Martinez (perhaps both, too) -- likely will be a tough sell.

The upcoming offseason is a very important one for the Red Sox. They aren't too far away from competing in the American League, but they cannot afford to sign any more bad contracts, especially when those deals could end up preventing them from retaining core players such as Betts.
