Report: ‘Big Dig' Leaks Costing Taxpayers Almost $7M Per Year

It has been seven years since the “Big Dig” in Boston was declared complete, but it's still leaking, and taxpayers are footing the bill, according to a new report from the Boston Herald.

The new report finds there are even bigger leaks for the central artery tunnels and taxpayers are footing a bill that's as high as $7-million per year.

Records show in 2013 and 2014, more than 16-million gallons were pumped out of the O'Neill Tunnel, the Ted Williams Tunnel and the I-90 connector.

This year the “Big Dig” hit the 16-million gallon mark in just the first six months.

MassDOT says the reason for the increase is still unclear, but they say it may have to do with last winter's record- breaking snowfall and work crews flushing out road salt from the tunnels.

Despite state officials saying the leaks would be sealed eventually, they're now saying the tunnels will likely always leak.
