A Massachusetts man is facing multiple charges after two dogs were recently found malnourished and in deplorable conditions at a home in Rochester.
Police said the owner of the dogs, 33-year-old Tyrone Mendes, has been charged with two counts of animal cruelty and two counts of failing to license a dog.
Authorities said a utility worker notified police on Wednesday after seeing two malnourished dogs at a home on New Bedford Road.
When police and animal control officers arrived, officers detected an extreme odor of animal urine and feces from the driveway. They then discovered "Ace" and "Bentley" locked inside the home and in very unsanitary conditions.
The home also appeared vacant and there was no food or water available for the dogs.
Ace and Bentley were taken to the Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL) for treatment.
"Two-year-old Bentley was severely dehydrated and emaciated, weighing just 20 pounds. Bentley’s body condition score was 1-2 out of 9, and he also has a number of scars on his face and ears," ARL officials said in a statement. "Nine-year-old Ace fared slightly better, while showing signs of malnourishment, his body condition is close to normal."

ARL veterinary staff said barring any unexpected complications, the dogs are expected to fully recover.
"Both animals are settling into their new surroundings and will be on a closely monitored feeding schedule to promote safe and steady weight gain. As they recuperate ARL staff and volunteers will work with the animals to ensure they are socialized and able to shed the fear and anxiety of such a taxing situation," said the ARL in a statement.
It's unclear when Mendes will appear in court to face charges or if he has an attorney.
