Hundreds Participate in 5K to Benefit Watertown Police

Hundreds of runners participated in a 5K race Sunday morning to benefit Watertown Police.

The Finish Strong 5K commemorates the fifth anniversary of the events that led to the capture of the Boston Marathon bombers. The dramatic finish to a nearly weeklong manhunt happened not far from where the race starts.

The race started and finished at Tufts Health Plan. Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman helped start the race off this year.

“It’s really special to be with these guys, police officers, they’re amazing, brave everyday,” Bauman said.

Another hero in attendance, Carlos Arredondo, said support from events like this keep faith alive.

“It’s a whole community [that went] through this terrible thing and we’ve been healing together,” said Arredondo.

The course took runners through the neighborhood where the manhunt occured.

Among those in attendence was Joseph Rogers, Sean Collier’s stepfather, who was raising money for the Sean Collier Memorial Fund.

“He was always volunteering to do stuff. It fits in with his personality,” Rogers told NBC 10 Boston. Collier was an MIT police officer who was killed in the line of duty by the Boston bombers.

The race is a benefit for the Watertown Police Relief Association the Watertown Police Supervisors Association in Watertown Patrol Officers Association.
