School Bus Carrying Dozens of Students Involved in Crash on I-495

Massachusetts State Police responded to a crash involving a school bus full of students on Interstate 495 in Andover on Tuesday morning.

The 2-vehicle accident occurred around 10:30 a.m. on I-495 north by the Interstate 93 ramps. It involved a tractor trailer and a school bus carrying 42 students and nine adults, state police said.

Two students sustained minor injuries from the crash, described by fire officials as cuts and scrapes. They were treated by first responders. Neither driver sustained any injuries.

"Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt," Andover Fire Chief Michael Mansfield said. "We were able to respond quickly, treat the two students who sustained very minor injuries, and moved the whole group to a safer location to wait for another bus."

State police said the children aboard the bus have returned to their school, Pyne Arts Magnet School in Lowell. Fire officials said the students were between the ages of 9 and 10 and they were on a field trip to the Museum of Science in Boston at the time of the accident.

No lanes on I-495 were impacted by the crash, other than the breakdown lane. The vehicles were removed from the roadway and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation said all lanes remained open.

The accident remains under investigation by state police.
