Heat Warnings in Effect Ahead of Scorching Weekend

Today (Friday): Comfortable start, hot & humid finish. Highs reach 90°, heat index 95°. Overnight Friday Night: Chance thunder west, sticky. Lows in the 70s. Saturday and Sunday: Hazy, humid, dangerously hot. Highs near 100, heat index over 105°. (Published Friday, July 19, 2019)

Heat advisories and heat warnings are in effect for New England late Friday through the weekend.

That quick shot of comfortable air that came in Thursday is on the way out this morning. We have a warm front moving from southwest to northeast, with clouds and fog early. And then, partly to mostly sunny skies will be developing with just a scattered shower in the afternoon.

The temperature is going to jump to near 90 degrees in much of southern and western New England, with the dewpoint the lower 70s. That creates a heat index near 100 degrees.

In this kind of air mass, showers or thunderstorms can pop up at any time. So Friday night, we may have a shower or thunderstorm. Otherwise, it’s going to be fair with warm and humid low temperatures only around 80 degrees in the cities Saturday morning.

There may be some coastal fog that will burn off very quickly, so at the beach it will be plenty hot as well. It will probably reach about 90 degrees near the beach and closer to 100 inland. But when we combine the temperature on the thermometer with the dewpoint temperature, that creates a heat index of 105 to 110 degrees.

That combined heat and humidity is the reason we have an excessive heat warning for Saturday

Once again, a scattered shower or thunderstorm could occur anytime anywhere, but most of the day will be dry.

Very little change is expected for Sunday. Any early morning fog goes to partly to mostly sunny skies, with a spot shower or thunderstorm in the afternoon. High temperatures will be well into the 90s with the heat index over 100 degrees.

A cold front gradually works in Sunday night and Monday. From north to south, we will see the heat gradually pushed to our south.

The front on Sunday night and Monday is much more likely have showers and storms, and any of those storms can be strong to severe with heavy rain. But they also lead to cooler weather in northern New England Monday, with high temperature in the 80s. Southern New England is still hot Monday with temperatures near 90 degrees.

Tuesday and Wednesday bring beneficial relief with temperatures falling back down to the upper 70s and low 80s with the lower humidity. The early call is that we stay on the more seasonable side through the end of next week, with a few showers and thunderstorms possible later in the week.
